Unirac partners with ThinkSolar for 650kW solar array in California
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO —Unirac Inc., North America’s leading manufacturer of solar photovoltaic (PV) mounting solutions, partnered with ThinkSolar to supply a RapidRac commercial flat roof solution for a 650kW solar array.
The array completed in December on Lithographix’s 250,000 square foot facility is not only the first commercial photovoltaic (PV) installation in the City of Hawthorne, but one of the largest commercial roof-mounted PV systems in California.
Unirac’s Custom Solutions Group (CSG) designed the ballasted racking system to mount approximately 2,240 modules, producing enough power for 390 homes annually. The Unirac CSG team developed an integrated racking design to provide an efficient, code compliant construction solution, ensuring quick permitting.
“ThinkSolar chose Unirac because of their proven experience in the field and special support offered by their Custom Solutions Group,” said Elmar Niewerth, ThinkSolar CEO. “Unirac’s engineers were able maximize power density and deliver a state of the art PV racking on time and budget.”
RapidRac provides the solar market with one of the simplest and most cost-effective racking systems for flat roof installations. Combined with innovative engineering and minimized components, RapidRac installations have seen an increase in labor savings, lighter ballast and fewer penetrations. The flexible design accommodates standard PV and thin film modules and meets the many challenges of weight, height and wind constraints required for arrays.
“We are grateful ThinkSolar chose Unirac and our 10 years of proven performance to provide a solution for a project of such magnitude,” said Douglas May, Unirac CEO. “Working closely with our partners is critical to installations like this and we are committed to supplying them with innovative solutions that meets or exceeds their requirements. We look forward to working with ThinkSolar on other major projects in 2009.”
A Pressing Need for Design and Engineering Standards
Renewable Energy World - March 7, 2011 - The solar industry has historically applied its technical resources, research dollars and time to increasing the efficiency, driving down the cost and improving the reliability of modules and inverters. The infrastructure that supports these solar modules, however, has largely been ignored probably because it does not generate any revenue for investors, businesses or homeowners.
Unirac’s 30% Share of the North American PV Rack Market
Greentech Media - February 28, 2011 - As module prices drop, innovation in BoS and racking becomes even more important. Unirac has a 30 percent market share of the North American solar racking market. Although mounting systems are not the most exciting components in the solar industry, a 30 percent market share is still impressive.
Mounting systems: strategies and competitive landscapes
pv magazine - February 25, 2011 - Mounting equipment may not be the most high-profile PV component, but it is a critical piece where innovative designs can make a big difference to costs. In an interview, Unirac executives discuss their strategies for the North American and U.S. solar markets, and the competitive landscape of a sector that is getting crowded.
US President sets lofty clean energy goal
pv magazine - January 27, 2011 - While setting an ambitious clean energy goal appeals to solar company executives, many are no doubt wondering what specific plans will get the country there. And, specifically, how will the plans benefit the solar industry. Doug May, CEO of Unirac, a racking system manufacturer in New Mexico, said he was pleased to hear the President’s message, but the message hardly affects what he must do to ensure the company’s growth this year and next.
